High Grade Safari - Mt Ruapehu

Looks awesome

Who are the riders? Who was filming?

riders

Andrew Chapman was filming, passes striker and speedy on the way down...

the riders all commented that this road is one, if not THE, sickest run they have ever had... Speeds were kept below 90 due to wet patches and the setting sun but they will be back on Friday to ride all day long

This is a GNARL Y road and requires riders to be able to control their speed and hold thee lines as the corners at high speeds have already claimed one rider.

If you keen to come ride i may be driving a car down first thing friday morning for any one what wants to come check out a sick run!

Oh man that looks so

Oh man that looks so liberating!

i think this one is by

i think this one is by george?

gradient

whats the gradient on this bad boy? % wise?

the gradient varies from

the gradient varies from section to section. some of the corners are steeper than the straights. Definately the best sk8 of my whole life, unfortunately it may also be the last as my knees are trashed after a crash on the second run. this video could be a document of my last sk8 ever, i'm out for 3 months with my injuries and still need recostructive surgery on ACL's of both knees. I'm not trying to scare anyone away from speed boarding, but b4 you do, concider all the risks involved as well as the consiquences to not only you but those around you like friends, family, or partners.

stink that u can't skate

stink that u can't skate anymore :(

i plan on bombing that hill in a week or 2

Speed Wobbles

Just had a wipe out at high speed. Ouchies. Only got a grazed arm tho, could have been much worse.

:(

Mr. Simpson please do not offer my god a peanut

yea the essential first bail

yea the essential first bail due to speed wobbles. we've all had it but after the first u pretty much get the idea and can prevent them. i haven't had the speed wobbles since

How so?

How can you not have speed wobbles?

I was actually thinking at the time how Jestah said that speed wobbles are mostly due to the fact that I havent developed the correct muscle response to speed (correct me if I'm wrong Jestah - don't know if thats what you said verbatim) So would I need to build up calf muscles and/or develop a form of tolerance/skill to deal with wobblies?
I always thought that tightening the trucks would prevent it, but alas that isn't the case.

wobbles

Each rider thinks of it in there own way... this is my view on wobbles:

Every board has a resonant frequency that when hit it will "ring" at, each bit of road has its own resonant frequency and when the two come into harmony a wobble will form. This is where the rider needs to act. If a rider tenses they will tend to over correct or amplify the wobbles where as if they relax it tends to act to dampen the harmony and the wobbles fade away. Riders that train often will have the correct muscle memory to dampen wobbles very quickly as it is an ART to be bombing at high speeds on a gnar road get the wobbles and stay relaxed and calm.

I concur

when people say "oh my board gets mad wobbles" or "aww my trucks are to loose" and i run mine on a loose set of gullwing chargers on a sector 9 bamboo sunset and i can hit 90k if my tucks right

The "Oh Shit" moment

What happens is that I tend to get a bit overconfident and develop too much speed, so that I'm going so fast that I've gone beyond the point where I can put my foot on the ground to slow down, or jump off. I just have to try and manage to stay on and hope that the path evens out or goes uphill. Its during those moments that I'm thinking "Oh shit what have I done, this is the bit where I die" etc.. The thing with skating/longboarding is that you don't have brakes. It's not like being on a motorbike where you can hoon about but decrease your speed if you start to get scared. Your at the mercy of the road that you're gliding along. Someone should really invent some kind of braking system.

Mr. Simpson please do not offer my god a peanut

you can foot brake at a

you can foot brake at a hundred if you have the confidence (and leg muscle to balance it) its when you get scared you tense up and get worse wobbles like jestah said you just have to realise what it is and ride it out.

skate brakes

A guy named Cliff Coleman already invented some brakes, google and you too could find your own set!

haha pure win!

yea once u get one of thouse u can pretty much skate anything!

Awesome

I thought someone must have already done it, seems like such an obvious idea. Though with it's own complications. Saw an electric skateboard @ Cheapskates that has a handheld speed/braking gun. Need one of those dealies. :D

Mr. Simpson please do not offer my god a peanut

:P

K, just done a Google search and realised you are having me on about the braking system :P

Coz I couldn't find any mechanical braking system anywhere. Perhaps there is still a gap in the market.

Only thing I could find about Cliff Coleman and braking is that he is attributed with the single foot brake and the Coleman slide.

:( I was hoping to buy some skate brakes. Damn you Jestah! :P

Mr. Simpson please do not offer my god a peanut

nope you gotta learn to

nope you gotta learn to coleman slide :) its the greatest i can stop at 70k and be sweet.

if you come out i have alot of great practice areas where i learned to slide

on the contrary

http://www.ohgizmo.com/2008/09/26/add-a-set-of-brakes-to-your-skateboard...

They are dangerous though they lock up and are just like slamming on the front brakes of a motorbike..... they send you flying

Learn to get comfortable

Learn to get comfortable foot braking at high speeds doing that will help you tune the muscles that prevent speed wobles, and never jump off or run off your board thats how femurs get broken.

yeah I had two knee braces

yeah I had two knee braces after i tried to run out from bombing queens street (before i could slide or footbrake)

If anyone wants to skate this, you MUST be able to footbrake or slide over 70kph and start reaaaaaaaally slow, coleman before each corner if you can, then slowly work your way up a bit faster. I can't stress enough how dangerous this road is, sure traffic is low but the gaurd rails and jagged rocks can cause serious damage, even death!

sounds fun

sounds like something i'll be interested in

I'll take serious damage for

I'll take serious damage for $100. But FMD that road is amazing. I will return to ride it again, cuz there's no way in hell that mountain is gonna get the best of me!!

thats the spirit!

What a fun read.

Like the "Oh shit" moment. Hahah. I remember my first major [major to me anyway] downhill accident. I hit a speed I felt was too fast, and thought taking a foot off to break just wouldn't do. Next thing you know I'm rolling, and my favourite leather jacket has an arm torn to shreds. So glad I was wearing that though.

Like Jestah said, I guess everyone has their own definition of how the wobbles form. Myself, I know my board can handle speeds, so I find my wobbles are more mind over matter. If I ever get into the whole "oh shit" moment ever again, I find singing "I can't get not satisfaction" to myself works like a dream.
I even sing it when getting blood tests, as I'm a wimp. But it works!

Extremely absurd. How is

Extremely absurd. How is Spider-man's girlfriend meant to save someone from speed wobbles? It's spider-man with the super human powers.

... Cough.

Lol

My no-fear song is Black Sabbath's "Never Say Die", but that's for psyching myself up to do something. Once I'm doing it, and i get to that "Oh shit I'm gonna die" moment, I start swearing or doing mental prayers. Haha.

Has anyone gone drunk skating? I seriously don't advise this. On the one hand it definately helps with fear and makes u more ballsy, but on the other hand you underestimate risk and your judgement, balance, and reactions are impaired.

But on the other hand, my third hand, it's a shitload of fun too.

BTW - On topic, when's the safari headed to Welly?
