Installing a visor on an helmet

Hi guys, I'm lookig to instal a visor on a mountain biking helmet. Anybody have done it and have some tips? Do you know any Helmet who match with a motobike helmet visor?

brad

If the helmet is designed to take a visor EZPZ go to you local MTX shop or bike shop and they may help you find one. Although it is not a one size fits all thing, I wanted a tinted visor for my road helmet and it isn't made for the brand of helmet I got. Tough luck there.

SO the next idea you can have is to visit a perspex 'shaper' I guess you'll call them they will heat it up and mold it into shape they you can just use some duct tape arround the out side bobs your uncle.

You can get some flexable you can get some flexable plastic that you can duct tape on I saw people doing at the Eastbourne. Dont ask me where to get it, find a plastics manufacturer or maybe someone who works with perspex can help. The flexable plastic will not offer impact protection bit will be the cheapest and easyest to put on, just cut it to size.

A few ideas for you...

You could just buy a cheap visor and tape it on but I imagine there will be some wide gaps to tape over and would be hard to find a close fitting one.

Tape looks rangi but heaps do it, its cheap and it works

Theres lots of different

Theres lots of different ways I would suggest you search the fish as there are some guides on there.
The only moutainbike helmet I have seen with another helmet visor is a bell drop and a charly visor. It doesn't fit perfect or flip and requires helmet mods.

heres my way it worked for me...

i bought a drop the other week and decided to make a visor for it and heres the way i done it... my drop comes with one of those shade visors so i can make it open or closed as well

i went to mitre 10 mega and got like 30cm of polycarbonate or what ever its callede (clear plastic) and velcro with the sticky bits then went to the motor bike shop and got a can of anti fog

then i went home and took the shade visor thingy off my helmet then got some paper and made an out line of what i wanted the shape to be like then i transfered that shape to the poly (when i bought it there was enough left to make another two visors), cut it out but with an extra 2cm to the poly so i can make changes if the shape was wrong. once my shape was right i put a hole on each side to put the visors screws back in so the helmet can go up and down and then put some velcro around the edges to hold it down.

i was going to mold the visor with a heat gun but i am to lazy but i dont mind the velcro holds it in shape

i hope this makes sense, i can not be bothered checking it haha and i can try post pictures if you would like...

cheers

I would be stoked

to see some photos Cani!

post up!

Thanks for your creativity

Let's send some pictures of your work!!!

Template

Is it possible to grab a template of it so I can make mine??

i will post one up

in the next few days i will, i need to make a template because i just made it up lol its quite easy to make one but to make it fit correctly you need to heat mold it (i havent because im too lazy) ill show on the template where i think is best to heat it

heres mine!

basicaly the same thing api did but on a '07 661 full comp.
i srill dnt know how to imbed but yea heres the link. oh and excuse the dressing gown. its cold right now :(

thats the ticket alright,

thats the ticket alright, i've been meaning to do the same with my buckets for a while. the good thing about not having a full and perfect seal from visor to helmet means it will breath a bit an not fog up quite so easily. Nice work, now i won't be going into this project blind.

I've done mine..

I've managed to make one for my Drop Helmet. I made it with 2mm Polycarbonate (found on trade me). I first drawn a template on a piece of paper, then reproduced It on the Polycarbonate, cut it with the Jig saw, Drill the 2 holes for the pivot screws, and gave the shape with an heat gun. I'm quite happy of the result, even if It's not look perfect (mostly on the nose). At least its does the job, and it's safe. I'm excepting to make a few more, to get a perfect one and for friends...
Here is the result and how I made It...

thats sick man!

the heat mold on the thicker plastic works really well. did u just heat it all at once then slap it on your helmet to shape it? does it stay down firmly?
that first try u did is at our house now and man that was quite shocking lol. good work

I've just heat mold the

I've just heat mold the polycarbonate by hand, until the shape sound good to me, then try it on the helmet. I did it a few times until the shape sound good to me. And yes It stay down firmly.
For the one you have, i made it without wearing gloves, and it made finger prints everywhere on the polycarbonate. i had also been to quick to heat and give shape. The slower you heat mold the poly, the better is the result...
Next time i do a visor, i will try to make a video of the making, so you can have a better idea of how i made it...

Bell Drop Visor Template

Api or anyone have one?
I have one but it is designed to set the visor slightly inside the helmet and would rather use the mounting screws and put in on the outside

i dont

have a template. i just got paper and put it around my helmet then drew the shape i liked on the paper then transferred that to polycarbonate. my template is not symmetrical but i can email you a picture of the template if you want it. i think pierre may have a template, im pretty sure he does

No Problem

I have seen the pictures of just the visor so I get the basic shape of what the template was.
I might use the one I have already and just add on to it

Don't worry Dan, I have a

Don't worry Dan, I have a spare visor I have made. It's not perfect (some finger prints,..), but I can bring It for you at Bathurst. It's the one on the pictures. I tried it, and it works well.
I also kept the template to make more visors later... If you need a copy, I can copy it and send it to you by mail.. But not sure you will receive it in time for the race

I might take you up on that

I might take you up on that if I have some trouble doing mine.
The weather is on and off up here and while I wait for goodies in the mail i'm trying to get one done.
Not having a template is no big thing it just means I have to do all the work myself

Ok Dan, I will take a spare

Ok Dan, I will take a spare visor with me at the race, so if you need it, just get it...

I just tried attaching some

I just tried attaching some .5mm PVC from gordon harris with self adhesive velcro - seems to be holding out alright and it's nice having a removable visor. $3 a sheet + $5 velcro :-)

hey guys i was sick of my

hey guys i was sick of my visor popping off the velcro so i tried heat molding it in my oven, it worked fine but then i got pedantic and tried to make it fit perfectly and ended up ruining that one so today i just got my stuff(i think its 1/32" thick polycarbonate and i just cut it out so it was slightly bigger then the opening of my helmet and then i wedged it between the foam and the outer shell of the helmet.
well here are some pics: http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/af96/doig1818/my%20boards/helmetandWc...
http://i997.photobucket.com/albums/af96/doig1818/my%20boards/helmetandWc...

its not flip uppable but atleast it wont be popping up halfway through a run.

hey richard do u have some pics of yours?
