just found your wicked website a few weeks ago..we are organising a skateboard event with punk / rock bands, street course and freestyle downhill skate comp at North Harbour Stadium 18th April 2009. We are skaters who work on production & site at events such as Big Day Out, raggamuffin and other big outdoor events. We have quite a few skateboard / surf and other sponsors. We will have a website and street poster campaign underway within the next two weeks. all compmetition forms will be available from our website when it is up & running. It is a free event and any suggestions or offers of help would be great. You guys can make the downhill section of this event your own....we have road closure for the road outside the stadium and although it will be a short run we can still make a good fun freestyle run. any queries email me greg@rollercoaster.co.nz .....more info coming soon

Wow, sounds fantastic, I

Wow, sounds fantastic, I look forward to hearing more - and will be there with bells on.

noice!!

what roads will you have closed?

if im not mistaken

Appian Way.
This was one of the road closures I saw in the paper the other day.
Map is here
http://www.wises.co.nz/l/Auckland/Albany/Appian+Way/#c/2rbtn/711kz/0/
If you also had access to stadium drive and the carpark you could extend the run a tiny bit still not over a km though.

I never saw it in the paper...but yep thats the road we are using...maybe next year we can close the civic cresent rd and hook up to appian way....The westfield mall is there so thats the problem...i had a meeting with them and they are sweet with me closing appian way. North Harbour has good potential for years to come as the event grows. This year we have a main stage with Luga Boa headlining and some other up & coming bands to be confirmed. G

North Shore Times

Last week there was an article about upcoming summer events that have roads closed for them. A few lines about a Downhill skate event with Appian way been closed for it at the end of the article along with a bunch of other events like the Triathlon and Soap Box Derby.

Sounds like a...

...road trip

Dh on a short track....

Will not be so good for the crowd. Most IGSA races are not shorter than 2km with a good selection of corners to give riders passing opptunities as well as crash potintial (which is the best thing about watching dh longboarding )

What i suggest you do is hold a slope-style event where riders lay down some sick tricks and get extra points for going fast or running a big list of tricks together... The only trouble is that it sounds like you guys will need some people who are good longboarders to judge it which will leave your rider pool just that little bit shorter...

How about you get in touch come out for some dh action Carnie Style and get a good feel for what the nz dh/longboarding is about?

yep hi jestah...I agree it is a bit short...I was going to create more of as freestyle 70's course with slalom cones and some slope style parts of the course. we will also build some launch ramps and a run off ramp so skaters can stop. we are keen as to get involved with what you guys are up too....whenever you guys are hitting the streets give me a call and we will turn up. We are having a meeting tonight at 9.30pm at Appian Way...you guys are welcome to turn up...we are going to skate the road and see what happens.....if our event goes well I can help you guys set up a proper downhill somewhere like the 3-4km IGSA races you are talking about. The event we are organising is about everyone getting together for some fun and getting things started. We have all the contacts and experience with production and councils to make an event happen...

give me a call at work on 021 580 801 or 4164240
cheers
Greg

DH on a short track

If it is a short course it might suit more a giant slalom than pure DH. DH could just be "exhibition" rather than race. Could also to some tight slalom if there's enough interest.

Pure DH race may be OK on a short track. Although not necessarily ideal for the racers, it will help raise the profile of the sport. It needs to be done the right (ie safe) way.

dh skate - last night on appian way

last night we all met at north harbour stadium. Jestah and his crew, josh and the freebord crew and the good longboard crew. thanks for all coming along. a lot of ideas and real positive feedback from everybody who rocked up. the street lights were out so we set a few of the vehicles up with the headlights and everyone had a crack at appian way. the concenus is that it is sweet for a fun DH course. was pretty entertaining with some good speed clocked up. was real impressed at the level of skating. I have a meeting with the council friday morning so will keep you all posted on my progress.

the racing will start with launch ramps...thru a slalom cone section then a strait-ish run to the finish with a large finish ramp to stop skaters before the round a bout (although it was cool watching jestah go full speed around it last night). every competitor will get a free skate of the course followed by two timed runs. we will then seed a 64 man on man knock out draw. with cash and prizes, spot prizes as well. inside the stadium will be another Kids slalom track and a slope style street course for the crew who need to ollie. more info soon...chur...Greg..

Rollercoaster 09 Update

Good News...the North Shore City Council have approved funding for our event which will pay for most of the infrastructure, portaloos, waste management, main stage, PA and lights. We have also had the road closure of Appian Way approved. We have Luger Boa (Jimmy formerly of the D4) signed up, along with about 12 other bands.

Anyone keen to volunteer to help with the set up of our event email myself with your details & any particular skills you may have. Any companies (esspecially all you underground guys making skateboards) send me your logos and website details and we will get it on our website once its up & running.

Anybody coming from out of town who needs accomadation also email us & we are going to set up a bit of a couch surfing network for crew to find a bed/couch for a few nights.

thanks to everyone who has helped so far...
